"Rooted" may be a better choice of words. What you see above is the top of an actual fence post that used to sit on my property.

The photograph above represents what I eventually came to see whenever I paid it a visit. So I brought it to life with my camera and some computer software simply as an exercise in creativity.

I can only attest for the 23 years I have lived here but local historians believe it's a good bet this post was probably placed in the ground over a hundred years ago. The general consensus is that it was set where it shouldn't of been; just outside my property line.

So last spring when the city of Alpine was reassessing it's property the location of my errant post was duly noted.

When I took down the fence [by demand] this post was so stubborn I had to pull it out with a tow chain hitched to the chassis of my truck. Apparently it was placed in the ground when it was still alive and as a result of an apparent "last gasp" effort, it sprouted roots. Seriously, a fence post with actual roots.

My wife has labeled me as a know-it-all (and as she is one herself she must certainly be correct). Know it or not it's her rhetoric reference to the the fact that my opinions are rooted in 62 years of experience. The fence post story illustrates the fact that right or wrong, in the end, even the most established and rooted of "whatever" can be dislodged with proper persuasion. So please feel free to attempt to dislodge any of my opinions that follow if deemed necessary.

Spring / Summer 2011

I like to play around with my video editing software. I film these clips in HD but in order to post a video of such length to this blog I have to dumb down the resolution to conform to file size restrictions. Very disappointing. What follows are some highlights of a few of my outdoor hiking adventures during the spring and summer of 2011. Harley, the black and grey dog is my regular hiking buddy. Abigail, the cream colored Carin Terrier is along as a rare treat, for her. Small as she is she's basically a pain in the ass because her terrier instincts kick in and she becomes an unruly wild dog.

Should you have an interest . . .

Yawn. A song I love, dedicated to all of my children and their children, who are featured in the video below. You Tube refused to post it due to copyright issues enforced by the owners of the song playing in the background. Their loss. Had I of never heard the song and stumbled across this video I would of searched for the song online and purchased it. It's beautiful. It's written and performed by Mark Knopfler & Emmy Lou Harris and can be found on their album, All The Road Running. On the right side of the control bar below the video window, click on 720 HD and watch it in full screen mode. Enjoy.

Einstein disguised as Robin Hood, with his memories packed in a trunk, passed this way an hour ago with his friend, a jealous Monk...

If this mesmerizing cornucopia of fantasy doesn't launch your flying carpet you must be either an accountant, a lawyer or a politician. I challenge you to find a more creative combination of words and phrases, and I'm betting somewhere within either Dylan speaks of you or you recognize yourself...

I need more ZZ Top...

An interview with Billy Gibbons followed by a classic stage performance by the band.

If you're interested, this performance is even better. It's a little more polished of an act; smacks of perhaps, Las Vegas. NBC won't allow the embed code to be posted on YouTube so I can only provide the link.

ZZ Top has got to be one of the most original acts ever; unmatched by anyone and definitely the most bodacious 3 man rock band on the planet.

And then there's the following performance. It's over 8 minutes long and was back when the boys were young and very energetic. They hadn't pegged the act yet. Billy even looks a little Amish.

Dennis Carl Wilson

On the evening of December 28, 1983 he dove off of the side of his yacht moored at Marina Del Rey and never resurfaced.

Divers found his body the next morning and seven days later he was buried at sea.

Dennis was the only real surfer in the band and as the drummer was rarely given the opportunity at lead vocals. He was their drummer and was 39 when he passed.

I shed a tear when he died and will remember him forever.

Treat your ears to Dennis' vocals.

Rock me momma like the wind and the rain...

I'm not sure why but this song reminds me of my friend, and trucker, Andy.

For You Men Out There

Everyone knows the Saxophone is sexy. In fact the inventor actually named it the Sexophone but misspelled it on his patent application.

After watching this video I think the Sax may be playing 'second fiddle' behind these ladies. Watch it in full screen mode and crank up the volume. You women out there will love it too. It's just a great stage act.
